Take Our Survey: Share Your Experience on Your Child's First Smartphone

SWGfL and FOSI have launched a new survey aimed at parents and carers who have either given — or are planning to give — their child their first smartphone. The goal is to better understand the concerns, expectations, and experiences that come with this important milestone.

Smartphones are often a child’s first real introduction to the digital world, and for parents and carers, this can bring a mix of opportunity as well as uncertainty. This survey is designed to gather insights into how families navigate this transition, with the aim of creating a practical support kit to help make their experiences safer, smoother, and more positive.

What’s Included?

Participants are asked about the age at which their child received (or will receive) their first phone, the reasons behind the decision, safety features they prioritise, and their confidence in managing their child’s online safety. It also explores their views on key concerns such as screen time, online bullying, inappropriate content, and social media exposure.

Importantly, the survey seeks feedback on what types of support resources would be most useful — whether it’s printable materials, digital videos, tips, guides or links to supporting websites.

All responses are anonymous, and the findings will be used to inform how we can help families make safer, more informed choices.
