Schools Invited to Join the Family Smart Start Pilot

Schools Invited to Join the Family Smart Start Pilot

Following the pilot launch of the Family Smart Start project, developed in partnership with the Family Online Safety Institute, we are now inviting schools across the UK to take part in the next phase of this initiative.

Family Smart Start was created to support families at a pivotal moment when their child receives their first smartphone. The project presents families with a physical box for their child’s first smartphone which would include guidance on having open conversations around online safety whilst providing easy-to-follow guidance for parents and carers on setting up parental controls.

As highlighted in the pilot, by age 11, often coinciding with the transition to secondary school, 9 in 10 children in the UK already own a smartphone. This makes schools uniquely positioned to play a vital role in shaping safe, positive digital habits from the outset.

What Participation Involves

Schools joining the pilot will help distribute Family Smart Start boxes to selected families. Each box includes:

  • Clear, step-by-step smartphone setup guides
  • Practical advice for parents on Good Digital Parenting
  • Tools to spark meaningful family conversations about online safety

The unboxing experience provides a shared moment for children and parents, turning what could be a routine milestone into a structured, educational opportunity.

Get Involved

We are now seeking primary and secondary schools interested in participating in the next phase of the Family Smart Start pilot.

By taking part, your school will help shape a scalable, evidence-informed approach to online safety, one that supports pupils and their families.

If your school is interested in joining the pilot or would like more information, we encourage you to get in touch.
