Roblox Releases Updated Parental Controls and Age-Appropriate Experiences

Roblox Releases Updated Parental Controls and Age-Appropriate Experiences

Roblox has introduced new age-based accounts and expanded parental controls for younger users. This release marks a welcome shift towards more tailored, age-appropriate experiences for children and young people. However, while these developments are encouraging, they cannot replace the vital role that parents and carers play in supporting children to stay safe online.

Age-Appropriate Experiences

Roblox’s introduction of Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) and Roblox Select (ages 9–15) accounts reflects an improved focus from Roblox around age-appropriate design. By aligning access to content, communication settings, and parental controls, the platform’s more tailored approach can support families find a more suitable level for their child.

Key improvements include:

  • Age-based access to tailored and moderated game libraries
  • Communication restrictions for younger users
  • Automatic account progression as children get older
  • Enhanced parental controls, including game blocking and improved approval features
  • Plans to align with global standards such as International Age Rating Coalition, alongside familiar systems like PEGI and ESRB

Why Technology Alone Isn’t Enough

Despite these advances, it is important to recognise that no technical system is foolproof. Age verification processes, including newer technologies such as age estimation and facial analysis, are not 100% accurate. Young people are often highly digitally literate and may use intuition, experimentation, or shared knowledge to bypass safeguards.

This is a broader challenge across the tech industry that will always need refinement. Any system that relies on self-declared or estimated age carries inherent limitations.

The Crucial Role of Parents and Carers

Despite the advances, parental involvement still remains essential. In-app tools and controls are most effective when combined with:

  • Open conversations about online safety
  • Clear family expectations around internet usage and boundaries
  • Shared understanding of how platforms work, including age checks
  • Trust and transparency between parents and children

Discussing features like age verification together can help children understand why these systems exist, rather than seeing them as barriers to work around. This builds digital resilience and encourages responsible online decision-making.

Building Trust Through Communication

Children are far more likely to stay safe online when they feel able to talk openly about their experiences. Encouraging regular check-ins about what they are playing, who they may be interacting with, and how going online makes them feel, can create meaningful conversations that carry lasting impact.

Parental controls can show what the boundaries are, but conversations help explain why they matter.

A Shared Responsibility

Roblox’s updates represent meaningful progress in platform safety, particularly in their effort to unify moderation, content ratings, and parental oversight into a single framework. However, online safety continues to be a shared responsibility that does not have a ‘one size fits all solution’.

Platforms must continue to innovate and improve safeguards, but families play an equally important role in guiding, supporting, and educating young users within their online experiences.
