On Safer Internet Day we come together for a better internet

This Tuesday 5 February is Safer Internet Day! Thousands of schools and organisations throughout the UK will come together to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

With the theme ‘Together for a better internet,’ the campaign in the UK focuses on empowering young people to take control of their digital lives and consider how consent works in an online context.

Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated globally in February in over 140 countries each year and in the UK it aims to inspire conversations about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

Last year 45% of young people across the UK heard about SID and as a result of the day three quarters of parents and carers across the UK said they talked to their child about using the internet safely. We also saw over 1,700 organisations unite to raise awareness of online safety issues and run events and activities right across the UK.

As part of the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC), we at SWGfL help organise and support SID, alongside our partners Childnet International and IWF (The Internet Watch Foundation). The partnership was appointed by the European Commission in January 2011 and is one of the 31 Safer Internet Centres of the Insafe network. Our partnership has a mission to make the internet a safer and a better place.
