With the start of a new year, many of us have made a resolution or two, but if you haven’t, then maybe it's time for a Data Protection Resolution.
Yes, I am serious!
Schools are now using more and more services to provide a seamless education experience for staff and, most importantly, pupils: icloud, Google for education, Capita, Dropbox and a wealth of other cloud services; ipads and other tablets are becoming a cornerstone of UK education.
But, in our rush to adopt these technologies, have you given thought to your responsibilities under the Data Protection Act? Possibly not, because, let’s be honest, this is not the coolest thing in the world. Dull it may be, but don’t underestimate its importance.
It is expected that 2018 will see a significant shift in the European Data Protection legislation which will place further demands upon businesses (including schools) to appropriately process data about their data subjects.
Are you ready for the new Data Protection Rules? Are you currently taking risks with the personal data you process? Are you compliant with the current regulations? How do you know?
Don’t worry if you’re unsure – help is at hand. 360data is SWGfL’s newest self-review toolkit and will shortly be available to purchase, guiding you step by step through the journey to data compliance and beyond. It allows you to rate where your organisation is against a maturing set of descriptors for each aspect;it then shows you how to make the next steps and provides the resources to make it happen.
It becomes a living, breathing development plan that maps your strategy towards the safe and responsible use of information and data.
