In December, Epic Games introduced new reporting and filtering features to its Text Chat function in Fortnite to enhance user safety. In this article we break down what new additions have been included and how players and parents can take positive steps to protect themselves against harmful content online.
New Text Chat Filters
Epic Games has introduced a ‘Personal Information’ text chat filter, a feature designed to remove sensitive information such as email addresses and credit card numbers in real time. Fortnite has also enhanced its mature language filter, which offers filtering of mature language such as swear words or toxic communication.
For players under 13, these filters are always on in all text chats. Additionally, the filters are always on in Game Channels - which are public conversations with other players who are on the same Fortnite island - helping to work towards safer interactions in shared spaces.
Expanding Player Reporting to Include Text Reports
Fortnite also expanded its player reporting capabilities with the introduction of text reporting. Similar to voice reporting, if a player suspects a violation of Epic’s Community Rules, they are able to submit their recent text chats to Epic for review. This helps Epic take action against players who violate their rules.
Text and voice reporting are always enabled for:
● All text and voice conversations that include players under 18, and
● in all Game Channels
How to Manage Communication Settings
Players can adjust their text chat preferences from the ‘Communications’ tab in Fortnite’s in-game settings. For parents and guardians, the Epic Account Portal offers a suite of parental controls, allowing them to manage chat permissions for their children’s accounts. Additionally, if a player indicates they’re under 13 in the UK when they create an account, they will have a Cabined Account where they can still play Fortnite but won't be able to access certain features, like voice and text chat until their parent provides consent.
Christine Ship (Partnerships at SWGfL) said: ‘’Epic Games have taken positive steps in improving their filtering and reporting features across Fortnite. Gaming can play such an important part in so many children’s lives that having the awareness and understanding of what to do when encountering harmful content in games can make their experiences feel far more secure and protected. We encourage schools and households to share gaming experiences with the young people in their care to help spread awareness of how they can stay safe.’’
