EPICT LogoAssessment Overview

The aim of the EPICT Online Safety Qualification assessment is to allow participants to demonstrate effective education practices in online safeguarding, within the context of their immediate organisation, and to encourage children and young people to develop their own sense of responsibility online. This assessment is designed as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of online safeguarding methods, tools and support. In order to achieve this, participants are required to present evidence of applied knowledge and practical application based upon current educational practice.

The SWGfL EPICT Qualification is based on participants presenting and evaluating a project or piece of work involving online safety. The emphasis is on a practical project or piece of work which may have been done around safe experiences online. Participants are asked to submit an assignment of between 750 and 1000 words (excluding appendices) which reflects the work or project they have done. (See Task List below) The assignment should demonstrate an understanding of the impact of the work or project on improving safety for children and young people and an evaluation of the impact of the work or project on the organisation. Participants can choose from the following task list or choose something in discussion with their assessor.

Task List:

  1. Delivery of a standard curriculum based lesson or series of lessons incorporating online technology and embedding online safety practice
  2. Dedicated Online Safety Awareness Session with children and young people
  3. Staff Development Session on online safety awareness, online safeguarding and school/organisation practice
  4. Parents Session on online safeguarding – includes awareness raising and school/organisation and home practice advice
  5. Governors/External Stakeholder Session on online safeguarding – includes awareness raising and school/organisation and home practice advice
  6. Production of school/organisation reference and/or regulatory documentation in the area of online safety for a defined audience, addressing potential threats and advising appropriate technology use.

Further scenarios may be agreed after discussion between the applicant and the nominated assessor

The assignment should be completed along the following lines with clear evidence to be provided by the Participant. The assignment will be marked on the following:

1. Scenario Plan/Background Document

This must include a brief description of:

  1. the cohort with whom you are working - Young people, professionals, parents, etc
  2. the objectives of the project or piece of work
  3. staff involved, i.e. teacher, teaching assistant, volunteer, youth worker, sports coach, etc.
  4. the resources available to support delivery, e.g. physical, technical, ICT

2. Explanatory Report

Participants are asked to demonstrate their applied knowledge and skills within the context of their chosen task and by addressing the performance criteria below.
  1. The identification and understanding of potential online safety threats to children and young people.
  2. A description of safety precautions undertaken and / or recommended when supervising children and young people online.
  3. Evidence of knowledge relating to online safeguarding requirements, guidance, systems and processes:
    • i)  Systems which inform, guide and support education professionals in the areas of online safeguarding and the promotion of the well-being online of children and young people.
    • ii)  Systems which enable reporting and offer assistance with online safety breaches and incidents at - School / within the organisation; local area and national level.
  4. Evaluation of the session which includes reflection on the achievement of intended aims and conclusions and recommendations for future use.

3. Supplementary Evidence

Accompanying evidence may include any of the following:
  • Presentation Material or “Screen shots‟
  • Teaching Materials
  • Transcripts (verbal, audio, visual) of the learning scenario
  • Observation Statements from Facilitator/s
  • Post implementation reviews including feedback from stakeholders
  • School / Organisation Online Safety Documentation
  • Action Plans
  • School / Organisation Improvement Documentation
  • Operational Plans
On application to take part in the SWGfL EPICT Online Safety Qualification, SWGfL will allocate an Assessor who will be the point of contact for advice and guidance and, who will assess the assignment. On successful completion of the assessment, participants will be notified and certificates will be sent out by post.

This module has a notional duration of 20 hours. However, study is flexible and dependent upon the pre-existing knowledge of the participant.

The qualification should take no more than 6 months to complete, from registration to certification. If a participant requires longer to complete an assignment the assessor should be informed as soon as possible.
