Have you dipped your toes in Barefoot yet?

What?

The Barefoot Project was established in 2014 with the original aim to help primary school teachers in England get ready for the computer science element of a new computing curriculum. It was originally funded by the DfE and run by BCS in partnership with BT and CAS.

Two years on, and now lead and funded by BT, the project continues to go from strength to strength. Workshops are now being delivered across the entire UK, we have over 1400 registered volunteers and there have been in excess of 100,000 downloads of the Barefoot resources! SWGfL are delighted to be involved with the project, leading on the delivery on nationwide workshops.

How?

26,000 teachers have already been supported through the Barefoot programme! You can get involved in a number of ways:

  • Download the free resources and start using in your teaching from today! Designed to be cross-curricular, the resources include both ‘plugged’ and ‘unplugged’ activities to support the integration of computational thinking and computer science into your existing lessons.

  • Request a free Barefoot workshop. These interactive sessions are delivered by local volunteer experts and are designed to improve staff confidence with teaching key computing concepts. We’ll show you how the Barefoot resources are structured, how they integrate within other subjects and ultimately what great fun they are!

  • If you’d like to become a Barefoot volunteer and would like to find out more about supporting local schools in your area, we’d love to hear from you too!

Getting involved with Barefoot is easy. Simply register on the Barefoot site as either a teacher or volunteer, and request your free workshop here.

When?

Workshops typically last between 60 and 90 minutes and can be delivered as either after-school twilight sessions or as an inset workshop (usually part of the staff CPD schedule). We’ll work around your requirements, just let us know your preferences.

If you’d like to request a Barefoot workshop, we’ll ask you to suggest a couple of dates that would work for your school. We’ll then approach local volunteers in your area and get this booked in for you.

Where?

Wherever you like! We are happy to deliver sessions on your school site, as workshops at local conferences, within PGCE and Schools Direct courses, and to groups of NQT trainees. We’re very flexible and will work around your requirements.
